Bronze is an alloy primarily composed of copper and tin. It is one of the earliest metal alloys extensively used by humans, with a history dating back to around 3000 BC during the Bronze Age. The addition of tin makes bronze harder and more corrosion-resistant than pure copper, and it has a higher melting point, which makes it suitable for casting various objects such as weapons, tools, decorative items, and musical instruments. In addition to copper and tin, bronze may contain other elements such as lead, zinc, and phosphorus, which can alter the properties of the bronze further to suit different applications.
High-tin bronze is a type of bronze, mainly composed of copper and tin, but with a relatively higher tin content, typically between 8% to 12%, and sometimes other elements in small quantities, such as zinc (Zn) or lead (Pb), are added. The addition of tin increases the hardness and strength of the copper alloy, making it suitable for items that need to withstand impact and wear. High-tin bronze is also known as "bell metal" because it is commonly used to make bells and other percussion instruments, which require special sound characteristics from the alloy. High-tin bronze has good corrosion resistance, high strength, and good elasticity, which makes it commonly used in the manufacture of springs, bearings, connectors, gears, pump parts, valve components, musical instruments, and precision mechanical components.
