Scrap Wiki

Common automobile wheels are typically made of steel, other alloys, or aluminum alloys. The automobile wheel is the most widely used type in the automotive industry.
Automobile wheel waste is a relatively common and almost standardized type of waste. The main type of automobile wheel on the market is A356.2 aluminum alloy, which is used for forging. This alloy is favored for its strength, durability, and light weight. A356 aluminum alloy is mainly composed of aluminum (92.05% to 94.35%), but also contains silicon (6.5% to 7.5%) and other elements, such as iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and titanium. This combination of elements provides the ideal properties for manufacturing wheels.
In addition to A356, 6061, 7075, and 2024 aluminum alloys are also commonly used materials for making forged aluminum wheels, mainly due to their good machinability. Although their heat-treated strength is lower, they are easy to polish and can be made into wheels with rich colors and smooth surfaces. Compared to cast aluminum wheels, forged aluminum wheels have higher strength and are commonly used in large vehicle wheels and sports cars.

A356 wheel, the most common type of wheel

For high-performance sports cars, trucks, and other vehicles with extremely high strength requirements, forged automobile wheels are generally made of 7075 aluminum alloy, which is also a common material. This aluminum alloy has a higher density but extremely high strength, excellent tensile and compressive properties. Wheels made of this alloy material can ensure higher safety and stability.

Common Classification

Automobile wheels can be divided into two categories based on their manufacturing process: cast automobile wheels and forged automobile wheels.
Cast automobile wheels, such as A356, A357, and AlSi7Mg alloys, are commonly used. AlSi7Mg alloy is often used in European standard wheels, which have similar composition and performance to A356. This alloy is a type of aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy used for casting, which has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for producing high-quality automobile wheels.
Forged automobile wheels mainly use high-strength aluminum alloys, which not only provide the required durability and light weight but also meet the requirements of appearance. Commonly used aluminum alloys include 6061, 7075, and 2024.
6061 is one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys for forged automobile wheels. 6061 alloy is an aluminum alloy containing magnesium and silicon, which has good machinability, excellent welding properties, and electroplating properties, as well as good corrosion resistance and high toughness.
7075 alloy is renowned for its exceptional strength and hardness, mainly used in high-performance vehicles or heavy-load vehicles. 7075 alloy contains a higher proportion of zinc, making it one of the strongest aluminum alloys. Although its corrosion resistance is not as good as 6061, it excels in withstanding heavy loads and extreme conditions.
2024 aluminum alloy is mainly composed of copper, with good mechanical properties and good heat resistance. It is usually used in the aerospace field but can also be used to manufacture high-performance automobile wheels. Its fatigue strength is high, but its corrosion resistance is poor, requiring surface coating treatment to improve.
There are also classifications based on sources, such as small vehicle wheels, truck wheels, and so on.
Forging processing can increase density and uniformity, enhance strength and wear resistance, and manufacture high-performance automobile wheels that are both lightweight and durable. Forged wheels have better structural integrity and lightweight advantages compared to cast wheels, making them a popular choice for high-performance and luxury vehicles.

Common Sources

Similar to aluminum engine block waste, automobile wheels come from the disassembly of individual vehicles, so their sources are often related to the automotive industry. For example, automobile repair shops, scrap yards, and dismantling plants are usually the places where these wastes are concentrated. In countries like the United States, many car owners repair and replace their own tires, so they occasionally have waste automobile wheels for sale.
In addition to scrap wheels, waste products from automobile wheel manufacturing plants, such as defective products, are also important sources of waste wheels.

Value Points

What kind of wheel waste is more valuable?
1. Uniform source of wheel waste
Wheel waste from a single source, such as defective products from a production factory or wheels from a single brand from a repair shop, has a higher value. Because they can be fully utilized without sorting.
2. Uniform material of wheel waste
After classification, sorting, and even inspection with a handheld spectrometer, the aluminum alloy material of the wheel waste can be unified, making them more valuable. Uniform automobile wheels are suitable for full utilization.
3. Clean and free of impurities
Clean means less dirt and oxidation, and free of impurities means that the wheel weights (usually made of iron or lead) and iron screws, decorative cover plates, etc. have been removed.

Decorative cover plate not removed
  1. No paint or chrome plating
Painted or chrome-plated wheels can enhance the appearance and have anti-corrosion effects, commonly used in high-end or modified vehicles. However, painted or chrome-plated wheels can affect their value.

Processing Methods

The processing methods for automobile wheel waste mainly include:
1. Manual disassembly
Use manual disassembly to remove iron screws, lead or stainless steel wheel weights, and decorative cover plates.
2. Mechanical crushing
Automobile wheels are crushed mechanically, mainly to reduce their volume. The hollow structure of automobile wheels wastes transportation space. After crushing, the materials can be stacked, greatly saving volume and transportation costs.
3. Polishing
Specialized polishing is applied to painted or chrome-plated automobile wheels. Painted or chrome-plated wheels not only affect the usage value of the materials but also have customs clearance issues. For example, Chinese customs do not allow the importation of painted or chrome-plated automobile wheel waste.

Detection Methods

Matching Direction

High-quality automobile wheel waste that has been sorted by alloy series is prioritized for matching with production factories that use them. According to their specific material, cast automobile wheel waste can be matched with wheel manufacturers, engine manufacturers, or manufacturers of A356 or other standard forging aluminum ingots. Forged automobile wheel waste can be matched with corresponding wheel manufacturers based on their specific alloy numbers.
If the automobile wheel waste has not been sorted, it can only be downgraded. Suitable buyers are manufacturers of casting ingots, such as standard or non-standard ADC12 or A356 aluminum ingots.

Special Attention

When inspecting the goods, pay attention to details such as whether the screws are completely removed and whether the wheel weights are removed. Also, note whether there are mixed alloy series and whether there is paint or chrome plating on the surface.
